The service life of products made from it can increase by years
The impact-resistant characteristics of stainless steel were increased by physicists from St. Petersburg State University and the Institute of Mechanical Science of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They showed that simultaneous application of gas dynamic cold spray with laser processing improves its impact resistance by about 5-6 percent compared to traditional production.

As the press service of St. Petersburg State University reported, stainless steel is used in the gas and chemical industries, in the construction of jet engines and power plants, as well as in the production of valves for hydraulic presses, turbine blades, fittings for cracking units, etc. It is valued primarily for its impact resistance.
However, despite the ability to withstand severe mechanical loads, the resource of such steel is still limited: destruction can increase under the influence of extreme temperatures or high-speed loads.
With the traditional method, to improve the strength of the metal layer, either gas-dynamic cold spraying under pressure or laser processing of the product was used.
“We showed the promise of combined processing of stainless steel, that is, the simultaneous application of a coating using the gas-dynamic method and its laser processing. As our experiments have shown, this treatment increases the ability of the material to resist spalling,” said the author of the study, leading researcher at St. Petersburg State University (Department of Elasticity Theory) Svetlana Atroshenko.
The new treatment will increase the service life of springs, reinforcement and others stainless steel parts for years.
