Weighing less than a kilogram, high performance and stylish design — is it possible to combine all this in one ultrabook? HUAWEI answered this question in its own way by introducing the new MateBook X Pro (Pro) 2024, which has changed significantly compared to its predecessor. Let's find out how interesting this ultrabook is in the review.
Design
HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2024 is available in three colors — white, black and light blue. The latter fell into our hands: the colors are truly original and fresh.
The body is made of magnesium alloy with micro-arc oxidation. As HUAWEI promises, this improves durability and wear resistance. The surface is pleasant to the touch, moreover, it is extremely practical — it does not collect fingerprints and dust.
The length and width of the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2024 case has not changed compared to the 2023 model — 310 and 222 mm, respectively. But the thickness has decreased significantly, now it is only 13.5 mm. And most importantly, if the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2023 had a mass of 1266 g, then the new product has “lost weight” to 985 g. Another tablet with a keyboard is much heavier.
The laptop lid can be opened with one hand, which is certainly convenient when working “in the fields” . But the hinge does not allow it to be opened 180 degrees: the lid opening angle is 150 degrees.
Display
The ultrabook uses a 14.2-inch flexible OLED matrix with resolution 3120×2080 pixels, touch control support and refresh rate 120 Hz. The screen is covered with tempered glass with an oleophobic coating.
OLED screens are still exotic in the world of laptops due to their high cost. The flexible OLED display used in the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2024 can be the envy of flagship smartphones. For example, there is support for high Hertz — with it, content on the laptop screen is perceived much smoother. And the high pixel density ensures high quality fine details, such as fonts, on a large screen.
HUAWEI claims a peak brightness of 1000 nits for the MateBook X Pro 2024 — in real-world use cases, the laptop can produce more than 800 nits. In fact, this means that you can work with it even in the May sun, the contents of the display remain clearly visible. By the way, the black color on the screen is truly black — all thanks to the OLED matrix.
Finally, HUAWEI paid attention to the shim ripple characteristic of OLED. High-frequency modulation is used here, thanks to which the human eye does not see flicker.
Control and typing
The new product inherited the keyboard and touchpad from its predecessor — the input system was a hit with users. Thus, the ultrabook uses a membrane keyboard with clear clicks. There is a switchable and adjustable key backlight. Working with large amounts of information and text on the MateBook X Pro 2024 is convenient.
The touchpad deserves special attention — it is a huge panel with support for a large number of gestures, some of which are custom and added by HUAWEI. You can take a screenshot by tapping on the panel, and you can adjust the volume by simply swiping along one of the edges. The touchpad has vibration feedback.
Performance, communications and sound
HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2024 was one of the first ultrabooks equipped with processors from the Meteor Lake family, with a choice of Core Ultra 7 155H and Core Ultra 9 185H configurations. The test sample got the latter: a maximum frequency of 5.1 GHz, a 6+8+2 core configuration and integrated Arc Graphics.
The top configuration of the MateBook X Pro 2024 provides serious performance not only by the standards of ultrabooks — such a powerful CPU can be envied and a desktop computer. Thanks to this, the ultrabook will be in demand among professionals: the model will not fail even in 3D graphics.
High productivity also has a downside — heating the filling. HUAWEI has made every effort to minimize it. The processor TDP is limited to 40 watts for better cooling. Moreover, the new product uses a new architecture layout — the components are separated into three blocks to place the motherboard with the processor in the center. The HUAWEI cooling system with fans that produce minimal noise during operation removes heat from it. Adaptive algorithms are also used in cooling; for the first hundred hours of operation of the ultrabook, the system “learns” by collecting data about the user’s usage scenario. As a result, we get a quiet laptop, the surface of which does not heat up above 42 degrees even during a stress test.
Memory can be chosen between 16 or 33 GB of RAM, and 1 or 2 TB storage. The latter are fast NVMe PCIe 4.0 from WD. Moreover, HUAWEI even thought about removing heat from the SSD drive so that its performance remains stable under load.
Is it any wonder that the flagship HUAWEI received a scattering of wireless interfaces? Here there is a place for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. Interestingly, the HUAWEI Metaline antenna is used here, providing an increased connection distance — tests have shown that the ultrabook maintains a stable connection with a Wi-Fi access point even through several concrete floors.
In the ultra-thin case there was no place for an audio jack — sad, but such are the trends in the world of gadgets. On the left side there are two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-C Thunderbolt 4 ports with support for DisplayPort video output, charging and reverse charging. On the right side there is one USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-C and a physical button to turn on/off the webcam. The latter, by laptop standards, produces very decent picture quality, and four built-in microphones will transmit the user’s voice without distortion.
The original internal layout of the MateBook X Pro 2024 made it possible to significantly upgrade its stereo system — six speakers with increased power can easily replace a decent audio speaker.
Software
Windows 11, with which the HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2024 operates does not need any special introduction — the system has long learned to work with touch screens and non-standard display aspect ratios.
Much more interesting is the HUAWEI software, which not only expands the functionality, but also allows you to integrate the ultrabook into the brand’s ecosystem. Thus, “Super Device” allows you to combine a computer and a smartphone into one space. For example, to control your smartphone directly from the ultrabook screen. And the performance optimization function allows you to speed up the launch of certain programs.
Autonomy
Although the MateBook X Pro 2024 has become thinner, its battery has increased from 60 Wh to 70 Wh At 70 percent brightness, the ultrabook continuously played video for more than 10 hours. In working scenarios, the model confidently works on one charge for one working day in 8-9 hours.
The power adapter remains the same — a 90-watt unit with a separate long cable. Charging can be done via any USB Type-C. We get 50 percent of the capacity in 30 minutes, and it takes about an hour and a half to fully charge.
Total
The MateBook X Pro 2024 cannot be called an ordinary update — the ultrabook has significantly changed compared to its predecessor. It has become thinner, lighter, more powerful and faster. The OLED screen with its high image quality deserves special attention. But there was a “fly in the ointment” — the audio jack disappeared. and yes, the new product will be more expensive than the 2023 model.
Laptop price in configuration:
