
VELIKY NOVGOROD, June 5The only student rescued from the Volkhov River in Veliky Novgorod, presumably from India, is in the Novgorod regional hospital, said the chief physician of the medical institution, Ilya Kalviyainen.
As previously reported in the regional headquarters of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, on Tuesday evening at 21.00 (which coincides with Moscow time), emergency services received information that a girl was drowning in a place not designated for swimming near the Kremlin on Volkhov. Fire and rescue units arrived at the scene. It was previously established that a company of five people who could not swim went for a swim. Due to the strong current, everyone began to drown. Eyewitnesses saved the girl and handed her over to doctors. The search for the others continued on Wednesday. Rescuers found one dead person. The search continues.
< br />The rescued 19-year-old girl was taken by an ambulance to the Novgorod regional hospital on Tuesday. According to Kälviäinen, the survivor is still under great stress.
«Nothing threatened her life. We hospitalized her in the thoracic surgery department. Yesterday she was examined by the staff on duty, today she was examined by a thoracic surgeon. She experienced a serious stress disorder. Of course, she is crying. She is receiving all the necessary help. I think we will discharge her tomorrow,” said Kälviäinen.
As clarified by the Investigative Directorate of the region, a total of three boys and one girl drowned. All of them were students of the NovSU Medical Institute aged 18-20 years.
As the governor of the Novgorod region Andrei Nikitin reported in his Telegram channel, according to preliminary information, students from India died.
A law enforcement source confirmed that the surviving student is also from India. Official information on the citizenship of students has not been confirmed.
