As part of the XXVII St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, one of the largest Russian spark plug manufacturers, Meteor Auto (commercial name Engels Svechi Ignition LLC), and the Association of Mechanical Engineering Enterprises «Automotive Industry Cluster» signed a cooperation agreement to implement projects for the production of import-substituting industrial products.
Meteor Auto is one of the world's leading and the only specialized full-cycle enterprise in Russia that produces a wide range of high-quality spark plugs, using proven solutions based on German technology.
The Association of Mechanical Engineering Enterprises «Automotive Industry Cluster» was founded in 2016 to consolidate the efforts of suppliers and enterprises, increase the level of product localization and create a unified supply network in the Russian Federation and the CIS. Among the main priorities of the Automotive Industry Cluster are import substitution and localization of production of automotive components, equipment for raw materials and materials, engineering, testing.
As part of the agreement with Meteor Auto, the parties intend to establish effective cooperation in terms of expanding the possibilities of supplying domestic spark plugs to the production of participants and partners of the Automotive Industry Cluster. The Association of Mechanical Engineering Enterprises «Automotive Industry Cluster», in turn, will provide Meteor Auto with assistance in the implementation of existing and the launch of new projects for the production of import-substituting industrial products.
«By expanding cooperation with the Automotive Industry Cluster, Meteor Auto expects to increase the percentage of supplies of spark plugs produced at the Meteor Auto plant in Engels using the most modern German technologies and with an optimal price-quality ratio to the assembly lines of Russian automakers,» said Meteor Auto CEO Alexander Kovalchuk.
“We see one of the key joint tasks under the agreement as assistance in promoting Russian spark plugs with a high level of localization on the conveyors of car assembly plants and on the secondary market for auto parts. We hope that Meteor spark plugs will also be in demand by other OEMs that have their own engine factories in Russia. These include AGR, Automobile Plant AGR and Hyundai VIA Rus, Haweil. The second task is to further deepen the localization of spark plugs by replacing a number of imported materials and alloys with Russian products. These directions correspond to the provisions of the Strategy for the Development of the Automotive Industry of the Russian Federation until 2035,” said Andrey Krainov, General Director of the Association of Mechanical Engineering Enterprises “Automotive Industry Cluster”.
Meteor Auto has successful experience in localizing production after foreigners left Russia manufacturers. Now the company receives wires and pins from precious metal alloys, necessary for the manufacture of electrodes for spark plugs, from Russian companies, whereas previously they were supplied from Europe. Production of glass sealant components has been established in Russia. Some of the components used in the production of high-voltage ceramics were also replaced with Russian analogues.
