Russian experts studied the operating principle of the ATACMS cluster munition

A weapons expert told reporters about the completion of a study of the internal structure and operating features of the M74 cluster submunition of the American ATACMS missile.

According to him, Russian experts have established , that the ATACMS long-range missile can accommodate 275 such ammunition. It turned out that the opening of the cassette occurs at a distance of about 200 meters above the surface.

«Due to the protruding feathers of the oncoming flow, the submunition begins to rotate… Having gained about two thousand revolutions, the centrifugal stoppers diverge to the sides, and a turn occurs engine inside. The detonator capsule becomes opposite the striker. When it hits the surface, an explosion occurs,” he said.
