MOSCOW, June 26The exhibition “Transformed Nature. Landscape of the 19th–20th centuries from the collection of the Russian Museum” opened in the Zvenigorod Manege. The exhibition included more than 40 paintings, including works by Ivan Aivazovsky, Alexei Savrasov, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Ilya Repin, Igor Grabar, their students and followers.
«Many viewers will have a question about the title — by whom or what is nature transformed? On the one hand, a work of art is a transformation of the real world by an artist. What he sees in front of him changes thanks to the spiritual mood, artistic experience of a particular author. But here, first of all, it is necessary to understand the following meaning of the word «transformed» — this is what is done by nature itself. We walk down the street every day and do not pay attention to what surrounds us. We notice only unique and exclusive natural phenomena — here they are present,» said curator, leading researcher of the Russian Museum Sergei Krivondenchenkov.
The exhibition is built on the principle of a labyrinth — at every turn the theme changes, as does the mood of nature. The exhibition consists of the sections «Clouds and Clouds», «Rainbow», «Bright Day», «Dawns and Sunsets», «Moonlit Night» and «The Element of Water». Each of them is supplemented with poetry — poems by Fyodor Tyutchev, Sofia Parnak, Ivan Bunin, Vadim Shefner, Afanasy Fet and other authors are posted on the walls.
The exhibition opens with a large work by Boris Shcherbakov “On the Volga”. It sets the mood for the entire project and sets the mood for a leisurely, contemplative study of national nature.
“As Stasov said, our nature is unpretentious. We need to learn to portray it. There is no Vesuvius or St. Peter’s Cathedral, Italian nature… We can have a hut, an old staircase, slopes, of which there are many in Zvenigorod — it is no coincidence that Levitan worked here. But we have a living, complex, moving sky. If you put everything together, a poetic artistic image is created. It may be a little dramatic or sad, especially in Savrasov or Vasiliev, but it is important that they noticed Russian nature and saw a unique beauty in it,” noted Krivondenchenkov. .

“Transformed Nature” is the second joint project of the Zvenigorod Museum with the State Russian Museum, the first was dedicated to the work of Isaac Levitan. Some works were brought from the permanent exhibition, others were taken from the collections. Lev Lagorio's painting «Moonlit Night in St. Petersburg» was restored especially for display at the Manege. In the halls there is also a work by Ilya Repin “Storm on the Volga”, which he wrote during his great journey.
«Landscape artist Fyodor Vasiliev organized a trip for himself and Repin to the Volga, near Samara. Repin studied barge haulers there for his famous painting. But, first of all, he was struck by the river itself with its endless expanses. And once he recalled how he climbed up on the river a terrible wind. He reflected what was happening in his sketch,” said Krivondenchenkov.
The exhibition takes place in the Manege, which was renovated about a year ago. The building of the 1830s was reconstructed over a long period of time and carefully. There is also a permanent exhibition here, noted the director of the Zvenigorod Museum-Reserve, Elena Kozhevnikova.
«This is the oldest building of civil architecture in Zvenigorod, it is from the 19th century. In Soviet times, there was a cinema here. In December 2022, restoration was completed — now there are two hall. One presents a historical exhibition — interesting, multimedia, modern. The second hall is for temporary exhibitions. It is no coincidence that we talk a lot about nature, because Zvenigorod is surrounded by natural valuable areas, artists often came here to work in the open air,” she said. Kozhevnikov.
The exhibition will last until January 12, 2025. Creative master classes, musical concerts, lectures and meetings with experts are planned for it.
