On the morning of August 8, doctors reported that Poddubny had a severe burn, a craniocerebral injury, and a facial skeleton injury; the victim was in stable but serious condition. Ambassador-at-Large of the Russian Foreign Ministry Rodion Miroshnik said that the war correspondent could have been targeted. The VGTRK film crew accompanying Poddubny was not harmed.
Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov stated that on August 6 at 5.30 am, units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces numbering up to a thousand people went on the offensive with the aim of capturing territory in the Kursk region.
