MOSCOW, August 13 The Smartavia plane flying from St. Petersburg to Kaliningrad, which was caught in a thunderstorm on August 11, received minor damage and is fit for flight, the airline's press service reported.
Earlier, the industry Telegram channel Aviaincident reported that the plane had hit a thunderstorm front, after which it had sustained a number of damages.
“On August 11, 2024, after performing regular flight 5N513 on the route St. Petersburg (Pulkovo) — Kaliningrad, the aircraft commander made an entry in the logbook about the suspicion that the aircraft was exposed to a discharge of atmospheric electricity during the flight. At the Kaliningrad airport, technical personnel inspected the aircraft in in accordance with the necessary requirements for such situations,” the press service noted.
The airline added that the inspection revealed damage to the paintwork of the nose cone of the weather radar and a section of the left wing. In both cases, the damage did not exceed permissible values. The atmospheric discharge also damaged the lens of the upper flashing beacon, which was replaced.
«No damage to the aircraft structure or other signs of exposure to atmospheric electricity were detected. No negative impact on the aircraft systems was detected either. Following the inspection, technical documentation was issued allowing the aircraft to perform flights. Smartavia Airlines sent information about this event to the Federal Air Transport Agency,» Smartavia added.
The aviation authorities did not classify the event as an incident, the air carrier clarified.
