In the USSR, many cars of the Gorky Automobile Plant were supplied to equip the fleets of various government agencies. One of the key customers was taxi fleets throughout the country. All GAZ models, from M1 to 24-10, had a specially modified taxi version at the factory.
“The universal taxi GAZ-24-04 was produced during 1974-1985. A total of 8602 cars of this model were produced. An exhibit from our collection came to us from the Moscow Taxi Museum. And the specialists did a really great job as part of its restoration. We restored the body and interior of the car, engine, gearbox and brake system, — director of the Museum of Transport of Moscow Oksana Bondarenko.
GAZ-24-04 — a taxi car based on the station wagon GAZ-24-02.It was equipped with a derated ZMZ-2401 engine (75 hp, A-76 gasoline), a taximeter, special lighting devices (“green light” and since 1980 “orange lantern on the roof), painting greenish-lemon or gray and «checkered» markings with the letter «T» in a circle on the front doors.
In the spring and summer of 1970, when mass production of the base GAZ-24 sedan was mastered, experienced station wagons were tested, and already in December 1972, production of GAZ-24-02 was launched, from 1974 the production of a taxi modification began, from 1975 — sanitary GAZ-24-03. The station wagon was modernized almost in parallel with the main model, and since 1987, after a deep modernization, the base station wagon model received the designation GAZ-24-12, ambulance 24-13 and taxi 24 -14. In 1985 & mdash; 1987, transitional versions were also produced, combining the features ofGAZ-24-02 and GAZ-24-12.
The salon GAZ-24-04 was notable for its thoughtful design and wide transformation possibilities. The front seats were similar to the base sedan, the average — the original one consisted of two separate seats, a wider one on the left and a smaller one on the right. Both could be folded (independently of each other) to accommodate additional cargo. In addition, the car had an optional rear row double seat; thus, the passenger capacity of the car with all the seats unfolded was 7 people(2 in front, 3 in the rear seat, 2 in the third row seats).
The upholstery of all seats was made in a practical, easy-to-clean leatherette. With the rear rows of seats folded down, a spacious cargo compartment with a flat floor was formed (the spare wheel and tool kit were located under the floor and were accessible through the hatch under the fifth door), which made it possible to transport cargo with a total weight of up to 400 kg.
