Issues with Peloton's PL01 have resulted in user injury and a US recall
Peloton is recalling 2.2 million exercise bikes after how some users were injured when the seats came off.
An Internet-connected exercise bike manufacturer said it found 35 cases of «seatpost breakouts» on its products sold in the US between January 2018 and May 2023 g.
The company said the part that attaches the saddle to the frame can break under certain circumstances on $995 bikes.
Several users have been injured due to the defect, including one case of a broken wrist.
Peloton said bikes in the UK were not affected by the recall.
This is the fourth time Peloton has reported a product defect in recent years, following the recall of bike pedals and both of its treadmills.
< p>In 2021, Peloton was forced to stop selling their high quality Tread& #43; after it was revealed that a small child had died after being hit by a device.
Two years later, it's still out of the market while Peloton is working on a fix and refunds are still being offered.
The troubled manufacturer has said the latest issue with its saddles will cost he is estimated at 8.4 million US dollars (6.7 million pounds).
Peloton said in a statement: “We have identified 35 reports of 2,160,000 seat units sold in the US as of April 30.
“Our commitment to participant safety is unwavering.
Owners of the Peloton Bikes Model PL01, the affected machine, have been advised to stop using them immediately.
The broken seatposts are the latest setback for Peloton, which is battling a painful turn.
< p>The company's sales and share price have surged during the pandemic as the popularity of its home exercise equipment skyrocketed during the lockdown.
However, it has struggled with falling sales since the gyms reopened.
The company cut over 1,000 jobs last year in response to weak demand.
Earlier this month, Chief Executive Barry McCarthy told shareholders that Peloton wants to expand its non-cycling business, such as weight training, yoga and meditation, to increase sales.
Peloton shares have fallen by more than by 8% on the news of the recall.
