A group of Spanish companies brought back to life the forgotten Ebro brand and the Nissan plant in Barcelona closed in 2021, production will begin here in 2024 an electric pickup truck based on the Nissan Navara.
Ebro is a trademark of Motor Iberica, a Spanish company founded in 1954 and acquired by Nissan in 1987. Under the Ebro brand, mainly commercial vehicles (trucks, vans, buses) were produced, in the 80s the Nissan Patrol localized in Spain had a clone from Ebro, and in 1987 the Spanish company was renamed Nissan Motor Iberica and the Ebro brand was no longer needed.
At the end of the last decade, Nissan decided to get rid of its Spanish facility, the Barcelona plant was shut down in December 2021, after which the Nissan Navara pickup truck produced here left the European market. Then, on the basis of this plant, with the assistance of the Spanish authorities, a “decarbonization center” D-Hub was organized, which is controlled by several local companies led by QEV Technologies and Btech, they established a new enterprise, Ebro EcoPower Automotive, that is, they resurrected the Spanish commercial brand lying in the archive.

In 2022, Ebro unveiled a prototype electric pickup truck based on the Nissan Navara, and today, a new prototype “very close to the production version” premiered at the Barcelona Motor Show. The new prototype is more similar to the original Nissan Navara than before, meaning that essentially all major body parts can be used with old dies, which will significantly reduce the cost of organizing production.

There are no official photos of the interior, but you can see it in the report of the Spanish magazine Forococheselectricos: in the cabin, too, most of the details are borrowed from the Nissan Navara, only the instrument panel, the multimedia system screen and the emblem on the steering wheel are replaced. Spanish colleagues also reported the price of a new pickup truck — from 54,000 euros without taxes. The overall length of the Ebro pickup truck is 5.21 m, the load capacity is about 1 ton. The exhibition sample is equipped with two electric motors (one per axle) with a total capacity of 220 kW (299 hp). The battery capacity is 100 kWh, the estimated range on a single charge is 440 km in the WLTP cycle. The plans also include a «budget» rear-wheel drive version with a single electric motor.

The planned capacity of the new enterprise is 60,000 cars per year, and it is planned to attract 1,200 former employees of Nissan Motor Iberica to work on it. In addition to Ebro, the new owners of the Barcelona plant will have the Zeroid brand, under which it is planned to produce upgraded and redesigned Nissan e-NV200 electric vans. Recall that the range of the Nissan company itself was replaced by the NV200 and its electric version in 2021 with the “heeled” Townstar, a clone of the new Renault Kangoo.
