The Bavarian company began producing the BMW 5 series in 1972, the seventh generation “five” debuted in October 2016. The fact that the manufacturer is developing the eighth generation of the model has been known for a long time: previously disguised prototypes of the novelty have repeatedly fallen into the lenses of photographers. And now the Bavarians have completely declassified the next generation BMW 5 series (G60 series), as well as the all-electric version — the BMW i5.

The change of generation was reflected in the appearance of the “five”: it is designed in the style of the current models of the brand, although it cannot “boast” of the huge branded “nostrils” of the radiator grille and two-story head optics. Instead, the BMW 5 series received a “kidney grill”, slightly enlarged compared to its predecessor, with a pattern of vertical stripes and a silver edging (optionally it can be highlighted). The BMW i5 has a similarly designed stub, familiar to electric versions.Another model of the new generation received recessed door handles, a designation in the form of a five on inserts in the rear pillars, basic 18-inch wheels of the original design, but other sizes up to 21 inches are offered for a fee. Customers can also opt for the M Sport and M Sport Pro packages, which feature a different, sportier bumper design.

The new generation BMW 5 series has grown: now the overall length is 5060 mm (97 mm more than the previous «five» of the G30 series), width — 1900 mm (32 mm), height — 1515 mm (36 mm); the distance between the axles is 2995 mm (20 mm more). The sedan also has increased base ground clearance: now 154 mm (10 mm more than its predecessor). />Pictured: BMW i5 eDrive40
The interior of the novelty is made in accordance with the current style of the Bavarian brand. So, on the front panel there is a curved digital display, which combines both a virtual “tidy” with a diagonal of 12.3 inches, and a touchscreen of the BMW OS 8.5 infotainment system with a diagonal of 14.9 inches. At the same time, multimedia allows, among other things, changing the settings of the air conditioning system. The ventilation deflectors are controlled by joysticks located at the bottom of the front panel.Options include leather upholstery, a projection screen, and a touch-sensitive strip — the BMW Interaction Bar — that runs across the entire width of the dash and even touches the doors. For rear passengers, you can order heated seats, four-zone climate control, as well as mounts for tablets on the backs of the front seats. » />In the photo: interior of the BMW i5 eDrive40
The 5 series of the new generation is based on the old CLAR platform. In the sedan for Europe, all gasoline and diesel engines are electrified: they are paired with an eight-speed “automatic” with an integrated 48-volt starter-generator. The starting version of the BMW 520i has rear-wheel drive and a 190-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo four (maximum torque — 310 Nm), while the total output of the “mild hybrid” installation is 208 hp. (330 Nm). This version takes 7.5 seconds to accelerate from standstill to “hundreds” (0.4 seconds less than its predecessor); while the maximum speed was reduced by 5 km/h to 230 km/h.

In other countries, for example, in the USA, the novelty will be offered in other gasoline versions: we are talking, in particular, about the BMW 530i with a 2.0-liter turbo four with a return of 258 hp. The BMW 520d version has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 197 hp. (400 Nm). Drive — rear or full. Next year, six-cylinder diesels will appear in the engine lineup. Also scheduled for 2024 is a range of plug-in hybrids, one of which will be a rear-wheel drive BMW 530e with a 2.0-liter petrol engine (total system output is 299 hp, 450 Nm); the second is the BMW 550e xDrive with all-wheel drive, a 3.0-liter engine (installation power — 489 hp, 700 Nm).

The starting version of the «electric train» will be the BMW i5 eDrive40 with a single electric motor, which is located on the rear axle. Its return is 340 hp, and the maximum torque is 430 Nm. To accelerate to a hundred, such a “four-door” takes 6.0 seconds, and its maximum speed is limited at around 193 km/h. The power reserve on a single charge for a rear-wheel drive «electric sedan» is 497 km, for an all-wheel drive — 455 km (the calculation was carried out according to the WLTP cycle). Germany), the predecessors were also produced here. New items will be on sale in Europe in October this year.
