Mr Trump hit out at US networks’ coverage of the outbreak during a rally in North Carolina on Wednesday night, telling the crowd: “All you hear is Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid, Covid. That’s all they put on, because they want to scare the hell out of everyone.”
However the figures offer a bleak outlook for the country with the onset of colder weather, which experts fear will increase the strain on the health services.
So far in October, 16 states have reported their highest daily numbers of patients hospitalised with Covid-19 since the pandemic began, including the Midwest states of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Hospitalisation figures are a closely watched metric because they are not influenced by how much testing is done.
Coronavirus USA Spotlight Chart — cases default
One of the worst affected states, Wisconsin, has set up an emergency field hospital to cope with the surge in coronavirus patients. Over the past week, the state has averaged 3,541 new cases per day, an increase of 44 percent from the average two weeks earlier.
Across the US, hospitalisations reached 40,264 on Wednesday, while the seven-day average of new infections has risen 45 per cent in the past four weeks and is also approaching levels last seen during the summer peak.
