Mikel Arteta has successfully made the transition from the Old Firm derby to the Premier League variety. Now he is determined to stop Ange Postecoglou from doing the same.
Postecoglou left Tottenham for Arsenal hoping to maintain his unbeaten league run of four wins and a draw since leaving Celtic. in June and became Antonio Conte's permanent successor.
Australia's first Premier League manager lifted the title Won the Scottish Premiership title in both seasons at Parkhead, including last season's treble.
But the away match at Arsenal represents by far the toughest a test of his short tenure at Spurs, especially as Arteta has nearly two decades of experience understanding the differences between high-stakes football on both sides of the border.
Arteta spent two seasons in Rangers' midfield from 2002 to 2004 and on the final day helped Glasgow's blue half beat Celtic, the then reigning champions under Martin O'Neill. In fact, on goal difference, it was Arteta's late penalty that was decisive.
Postecoglou will also find it difficult for his players to match Arteta's instantaneous performance in his first Old Firm derby, with the Spaniard scoring just six minutes into the match against Parkhead, which ended 3-3 in October 2002.
was a shock to me,” he recalled. “For the first five or six minutes the ball didn’t touch the grass and everything was allowed! When I look back, I say, “Wow, what was that?”
Arteta tried out the Liverpool derby as an Everton player before he featured in the North London derby as a key member of Arsenal's midfield under Arsene Wenger. His first defeat, 2-1 at White Hart Lane in 2011, ended with a goal from Kyle Walker, while his first defeat as manager at Tottenham's new stadium in 2020 ended in defeat by the same scoreline. The line, with Toby Alderweireld's goal making the difference.
Successor Unai Emery, however, has won four of the last five derbies.
“I have so many good memories,” he said . “A big comeback we made when we were 2-0 down. I think this was my second year here. It was amazing how the stadium lifted the team after we scored the first goal.”
“The first win I won here as a coach was also really special because at that moment we were in a position where we really needed a win.”
Is there anything better feeling in football than the post Afterglow after winning a derby? “No,” he said. “Because you know what it means for people to have that opportunity in your work, to make someone happy. We feel a great sense of satisfaction and responsibility.”
David Raya is expected to retain his place in goal, replacing England's Aaron Ramsdale. Arteta admitted it was not an easy decision.
“Yes, it is difficult, but the same with other players,” he said. “Aaron is an exceptional character, he has charisma and an aura about him. But at the end of the day you have to put together a team, the line-up you feel and how best to set up the game.»

He will be joined by assistants Lee Betts and Wade Smith. The fourth official will be Michael Salisbury, with Paul Tierney on Var.
