Nicholas Jackson had double cause for celebration: he won Chelsea's goal of the month competition in September and booked a League Cup fourth round tie against Blackburn Rovers.
Jackson broke the duck » Chelsea in September, and his only goal was enough to see off Brighton, who missed two great chances given to them by the club's former goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
Chelsea won't play again until October 2 against Fulham. In the Premier League, Jackson's goal will remain the club's only goal in September, but it proved valuable.
Jackson will serve a one-match ban against Fulham after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season against Aston Villa, but his second-half goal to win against Brighton at Stamford Bridge went some way to rectifying the situation.
«I was very, very pleased (that Jackson scored),» Chelsea coach Mauricio Pochettino said. “When a striker scores, it’s always important. He needed to feel the goal and I think it was an important game for him. It's important to survive the competition to gain momentum.»
Chelsea faced another injury threat, however, with Ben Chilwell forced off in stoppage time with a hamstring problem, it was seen home team. game with 10 men.
Jackson also had a goal disallowed for offside, which might have been awarded if VAR had been used, and there was some cause for optimism in that performance from Pochettino, who was booked for challenging a late decision.
Cole Palmer started. For the first time since moving to Chelsea and signing a contract with Manchester City, he showed his worth in the number ten position, noting a wonderful assist for Jackson's goal.
Jan Maatsen passed the ball to Palmer and he brilliantly picked out Jackson, who slotted the ball into the net for just his second goal since joining Chelsea.
Jackson thought he had scored his second with 19 minutes left as he celebrated after putting the ball into the net but was flagged for offside and VAR was not used in the third round. Replays showed he could well have been in the game.
Chelsea's two lucky moments came in the first half, when Brighton were the better team but failed to convert their chances.
The inclusion of Joao Pedro was one of seven changes made by Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi and the striker failed to make the most of the gift handed to him by Sanchez in the 24th minute.
There was no real pressure. at Sanchez with the ball at his feet on the edge of his six-yard box, and yet he passed straight to the disbelieving Pedro.
When Sanchez had only to play to give the visitors the lead, Pedro lifted the ball. The ball sailed over a Chelsea player and over the crossbar.
Chelsea could hardly believe their luck, but nine minutes later they gave Pedro's team-mate Ansu Fati perhaps an even better opportunity.
Sanchez again tried to play from the back and passed the ball to another former Brighton player, Moises Caicedo. But the midfielder was quickly blocked and Fati appeared to have the goal at his mercy.
The Barcelona loanee telegraphed his attempted shot around Sanchez, who dived to his left to push the ball past his post.< /p > Line-ups: Chelsea vs Brighton & Hove Albion
