Changan is preparing for the premiere of a brutal SUV – Deepal G318

The Chinese media have already dubbed the new product an SUV, but it is possible that the model will still turn out to be a crossover. The full premiere will be held later this year.

The Deepal brand was launched by the “celestial” company Changan in 2022, and it was originally known as Shenlan (another name is Deep Blue). This brand produces electrified cars; today the line includes two models – the SL03 liftback and the S7 SUV. In China, the brand was received quite warmly: according to local specialized media, almost 124,000 cars were sold in total in 2023. And now the third model is approaching — images of an SUV have been published, which has been assigned the index G318 (but it is possible that this is still an in-plant designation).

Many Chinese media consider the upcoming new product to be an SUV: they say that the model will compete with the Tank and FangChengBao frames (sub-brands of Great Wall and BYD, respectively). However, the Deepal G318 may well turn out to be a crossover with a monocoque body and a brutal appearance — in this case, its main competitors will be the Jetour Traveler (the brand is owned by Chery) and the “hardcore” Haval crossovers (this brand is also owned by Great Wall).

Be that as it may, the Deepal G318 looks quite impressive: the new product received a massive unpainted body kit, large wheels and a hinged rear door with a spare wheel, and additional lighting equipment was installed on the roof. The SUV also received unusual headlights, C-shaped lights and retractable door handles. The interior is not illuminated yet.

The brand itself has not yet spoken about the technology. The Chinese write that the Deepal G180 will be offered as an all-wheel drive hybrid with two electric motors, plus it will have a “turn on the spot” function.

The new SUV will premiere later this year. It is expected that the Deepal G318 will cost somewhere from 300,000 yuan, which is equivalent to approximately 3,729,000 rubles at the current exchange rate.

Recall that the Deepal brand has already reached beyond China — in particular, its models can be purchased in Thailand (later they even localize production there). It is possible that Changan will subsequently introduce this brand to the Russian market.
