Boris Johnson has backed Donald Trump's re-election campaign, saying the «global walkerati» are «trembling furiously» at the prospect of a second term.
The former prime minister, who served alongside Trump for 13 months between 2019 and 2021, said he believed he would continue US support for Ukraine and praised his “willingness to use force” and “total unpredictability.”
Writing for the Daily Mail, Johnson said the prospect of a second Trump presidency had caused a «scream» from the «Western liberal intelligentsia» and caused «pure, vague fear.»
«I'm told that at cocktail parties in Davos, Vokerati around the world were shaking so hard that you could hear the ice clinking in their Negroni,” he wrote.
“In the common rooms of our elders, in the universities, in the Church of England synod, in the Orwellian corridors of the BBC and among much of the British establishment, there has been a deafening orgy of nose-holding disgust.”
Mr Trump has a commanding personality. is leading the Republican primary with a landslide victory in the Iowa caucuses earlier this week and is the favorite to repeat that victory in New Hampshire on Tuesday.
His main rival in the state, Nikki Haley, launched a series of attacks on the former president, while he falsely claimed that he was ineligible to run for the White House because of his Indian heritage.
Although no state is large enough population to sway the candidacy in favor of either candidate, they are considered to have a disproportionate influence on the race because they vote first.
“Reasonable people see that Mr. Trump is not, in fact, a potential dictator, and they have begun to resent what appear to be legal gimmicks to exclude him from the running,” Mr. Johnson wrote. “The crazier the attempts to repeal it, the stronger it will become. The more bitterly his enemies treat him under the law, the more unstoppable he seems.”
Mr Johnson said he believed Mr Trump would continue US support for Ukraine over supplies to this country of ammunition in 2019. Russia invaded the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
“It was Donald Trump who gave the Ukrainians those Javelin anti-tank weapons that… were so valuable to the Ukrainians in the battle for Kyiv; and, at least in part, it was thanks to this bold decision by Trump that the Ukrainians were able to stun the world and force Putin’s armies to flee the Ukrainian capital,” he added.
“So whatever they say about President Trump now , I can't believe he would want to go down in history as the president who abandoned a country he had already remarkably helped keep free.»
Mr Trump previously said he would end the war in Ukraine “in one day” if he was re-elected, which was interpreted as a call for a negotiated settlement that would leave Russia permanently in control of parts of Ukrainian territory.
Mr Johnson said the West would be “stronger” under a Trump presidency because it would “demand that the Europeans paid more for their own territories.” defense,» strengthening NATO's arsenal.
