MOSCOW, March 5 Former head coach of the Russian national team Stanislav Cherchesov stated that in the near future he is considering options to work only in Russia.
Cherchesov led the Russian national team from 2016 to 2021. Under his leadership, the team reached the quarter finals of the 2018 home World Cup, but at Euro 2020 they took last place in a group with the teams of Belgium, Denmark and Finland. The specialist's last place of work was the Hungarian Ferencvaros.
“»The present is clear — I’m here, watching football, I watched almost the entire (19th round) of the RPL. And what about the future, if we talk about the national team (Russia), then it has a head coach, let them decide, whether they will renew or not. And if they apply, then we will, as they say, decide this issue. I always say that the national team of your country is not an invitation, it is an appointment. As for a foreign club, I showed you a couple of SMS messages. There is a certain demand is another matter, we see what is happening in the world, and I have an inner conviction that in this situation I should be in my country and be useful to my country,” Cherchesov said on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
«For now this is the position, we'll see, championships have started in many countries, so we'll think. Whatever our inner voice tells us, that's what we'll do. I think I should be here for now,» the coach added.
In February 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) suspended Russian national teams and clubs from participating in international competitions for an indefinite period due to the events in Ukraine. In the fall of 2023, the organizations clarified that the sanctions will not be lifted until the completion of the SVO.
