Sir Geoffrey called on the Conservative Party to “renew, reinvigorate and reinvigorate”;
Sir Geoffrey Cox, the former attorney general for Theresa May and Boris Johnson, has warned that the party may not emerge as a “credible opposition” after the next general election.
Sir Geoffrey, who has been a Conservative MP for almost two decades, said a Labor victory consistent with the party's current poll lead could see the Tories struggle to form a front bench and said such a situation would be «not good for democracy.»
According to a YouGov poll carried out by The Telegraph of more than 14,000 people, the Conservatives are forecast to retain just 169 seats, giving Labor a majority of 120 seats.
A Survation poll showed Sir Keir Starmer's party could win up to 190 votes.
Such a result may not be a «reasonable and sensible thing to happen in this country», Sir Geoffrey said, telling GB News: «The suggestion that Labor can win a 200-seat majority effectively destroys any real opposition.
“This is bad for democracy, but we, for our part, must show why we should be elected again, why our party stands for truly important values and principles.”
He said no party has the «right» to «get tired» and that under Rishi Sunak's leadership the Conservatives must «renew, invigorate and reinvigorate» themselves, arguing that the party «stands for something important in the soul of this country». /p>
Sir Geoffrey, a former senior solicitor, has represented Torridge and West Devon since 2005. It has a majority of 24,992 seats, which was previously held by the Liberal Democrats. Labor has never won it.
A YouGov poll published in January predicted his new seat of Torridge and Tavistock would remain blue.
The latest Telegraph poll puts Labor ahead of the Conservatives by 20 points.
< p>Sir Geoffrey said his own party was to blame for its worsening post-election prospects, saying: “The blame lies with the Conservative Party. If we are not doing our job as well as we should, then we need to do it better.”
