MOSCOW, April 15 The Progress Rocket and Space Center (RSC) has resumed work on the project of a super-heavy rocket for flights to the Moon and Mars, now A program for the creation of a rocket and space complex is being formed, said the general director of the enterprise, Dmitry Baranov, on the air of the Samara-24 TV channel.
Last week, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said that, according to preliminary estimates, about 600 billion rubles will be allocated for the creation of a Russian super-heavy rocket for flights to the Moon and Mars.
“We had a state contract for a technical project for a super-heavy vehicle, but at a certain point the state customer represented by the state corporation (Roscosmos — ed.) decided that this work should be temporarily suspended… Now a program for creating this complex is being formed, but this the work is not finished yet,” Baranov said on the Samara-24 TV channel.
According to him, there are “various variations” of creating a super-heavy rocket, including on the basis of the first stage of the Soyuz-5 medium-class rocket currently being developed with RD-101 engines. The introduction of reusable stages and the use of methane as fuel are also being discussed, the general director said.
The decree of President Vladimir Putin on the creation of the Yenisei super-heavy class launch vehicle for flights to the Moon was signed at the beginning of 2018. The first launch was planned for 2028. The technical design of the super-heavy rocket was suspended in February 2021. As Dmitry Rogozin, who held the post of head of Roscosmos at that time, said, it is necessary not to create a rocket based on the developments of 20 years ago, but to use the latest technologies. It was assumed that development could be resumed after the rocket's design was revised — instead of oxygen-kerosene engines, methane engines would be used.
