YEKATERINBURG, July 8The Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg arrested the administrator of the Telegram channel “Human Rights Defenders of the Urals” Alexey Sokolov until September in the case of displaying Facebook symbols*, the court’s press service reported.
Earlier, the agency's source in the security forces reported that a criminal case had been opened against Sokolov under Part 1 of Article 282.4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Repeated propaganda or public display of Nazi paraphernalia or symbols, or paraphernalia or symbols of extremist organizations). The reason for initiating the case was the distribution by the human rights activist of materials and symbols of Facebook*.
< br />““Today they chose a preventive measure in the form of detention until September 1,” said the agency’s interlocutor.
In October 2023, the Leninsky District Court of Yekaterinburg arrested Sokolov for five days for publicly displaying symbols of an extremist organization. This was the first case of arrest in Russia for publishing a Facebook logo on the Internet*.
* The activities of Meta (social networks Facebook and Instagram) are prohibited in Russia as extremist.
