«The Egyptian archaeological mission of the Supreme Council of Antiquities has discovered 63 mud-brick burials and several simple burials,» the ministry said in a statement.
The excavations were reportedly carried out in the Tell ed-Deir cemetery area in the city of Damietta el-Gedida.
The head of the Egyptian Antiquities Department, Ayman Ashmawy, said the mission found a number of funerary amulets, figurines, clay pots, ceramic dishes, and 38 bronze coins from the Ptolemaic era inside the burials.
Mission leader Qutb Fawzi stressed that the mission also managed to discover a large adobe cemetery, which contained a number of burials of high social status.
