Jeep has decided on a comprehensive update of the JL generation Wrangler frame SUV to increase its chances of maintaining leadership in its segment in the US market .
In February, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 20th Anniversary debuted with a new grille — it turned out that this was the prologue to a full-scale restyling of the JL generation SUV, which has been produced since 2017: the 2024 Wrangler is presented at the New York Auto Show, despite the fact that it is still on sale “pre-reform” versions of the 2022 and 2023 model years remain — this is good, if only because those who want to purchase a diesel Wrangler still have such an opportunity, there are no diesel engines in the 2024 model year range.
A classic frame SUV without a diesel engine is, of course, strange, but not in the USA: Jeep's main competitor, the Ford Bronco, is offered exclusively with gasoline engines and at the same time sells like hot cakes. In the first quarter of 2023, the Ford Bronco sold 32,430 units in the United States, which is 37.6% more than in January-March last year. In turn, the demand for Jeep Wrangler for the same period fell by 17% to 37,971 units. — with such multidirectional dynamics, the Wrangler risks losing the status of the best-selling frame SUV in the US this year and skip ahead of the Bronco. Whether restyling will help Jeep or not, it will be clear pretty soon.

Other innovations in appearance are an antenna integrated into the windshield frame instead of the previous «pin» and a new design of rims (from 17 to 20 inches).
1/5 2/5 3/5 4/5 5/5In the cabin, the changes are more ambitious: for the installation of the new Uconnect 5 multimedia system with a wide 12.3-inch screen, the front panel had to be heavily redrawn, because before the screen was a maximum of 8.4-inch, sandwiched between the central round air ducts. Instead of round air ducts, there are now narrow rectangular air ducts located under the multimedia screen. The instrument panel is the same, but in a new plastic frame adjacent to the multimedia screen — the effect of a bulky two-screen scoreboard has turned out, due to which painting the panel in body color has lost its meaning. In short, it used to be sleeker, but now this elegance has been sacrificed to modern electronics: more than 3,000 interesting routes for off-road rides are wired into the “navigation”, but full access is only available through a paid subscription …
Another important interior update is side window airbags for the first and second row seats (there were none before).

All gasoline engines are the same: a 2.0-liter turbo four (274 hp, 400 Nm), a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 (289 hp, 353 Nm) and a 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 ( 476 hp and 637 Nm). The output of the plug-in hybrid power plant based on the 2.0-liter engine is also the same — 380 hp. and 637 Nm. A manual 6-speed gearbox is available only in combination with the V6, the rest of the engines and the hybrid are only equipped with an 8-speed «automatic». The standard equipment of the hybrid now includes four sockets for 120 V and 30 A for powering external devices, and if the «party» takes place on the street, then when the battery is discharged, the internal combustion engine will automatically turn on and will «thresh» as a generator.

There are even more configurations and options, we will not describe them in detail within the news, we only note that the extreme version of the Rubicon received a reinforced Dana 44 HD full float rear axle and an optional front winch, designed for 3.6 tons of load. In addition to the “just” Rubicon, the range now includes an advanced Rubicon X with steel bumpers, beadlock wheels, 35-inch tires, a front-facing “off-road” camera, a powerful Alpine audio system, leather seats with power adjustments and a bunch of other amenities.
Prices for the updated Jeep Wrangler have not yet been announced, 2024 SUVs will appear at US dealers in the coming months, presentation of a related restyled Jeep Gladiator pickup is also, presumably, just around the corner.
