The Chinese company BYD continues to expand its line of low-cost electric vehicles: the second-generation BYD e2 compact hatchback with a very attractive price tag went on sale in the home market .
Inexpensive BYD electric trains from the so-called “oceanic” line are in good demand: the BYD Dolphin hatchback, updated at the end of last year, overtook Tesla Model Y in China in January-February 2023: according to the CleanTechnica resource, 39,971 were sold and 39,710 pcs. accordingly, only the ultra-budget urban electric car Wuling Hongguang Mini EV sells better in the EV segment — 46,683 units. In the near future, BYD will bring to the home market the smallest electric hatchback Seagull (length — 3780 mm), and yesterday sales of the second-generation BYD e2 compact hatchback started, it will take a place in the «oceanic» model line between Seagull and Dolphin.

The first generation BYD e2 hatchback debuted exactly four years ago — in April 2019, this model was aimed mainly at the taxi and car sharing market, it also had a sedan version — BYD e3. Now, the BYD e2 has been refocused on retail sales and positioned as an inexpensive family car: the body was restyled and a fresh modular e-platform 3.0 cart from BYD Dolphin was rolled up under it. Thus, a more or less full-fledged second generation was obtained.

The body as a result of the «facelift» lengthened by 20 mm to 4260 mm, all other dimensions are the same: width — 1760 mm, height — 1530 mm, wheelbase — 2610 mm. It turns out that the new BYD e2 is longer than the BYD Dolphin (4125 mm), has traditional hatchback proportions (the Dolphin has an almost one-volume profile), and costs less: the prices for the new BYD e2 start at 102,800 yuan (1.21 million rubles in translation at the current rate), while for BYD Dolphin you need to pay at least 116,800 yuan (1.37 million rubles) with very close technical characteristics.

The only electric motor in the BYD e2 is located on the front axle and produces a maximum of 70 kW (95 hp) and 180 Nm. The battery with a capacity of 43.2 kWh provides 405 km of run on the CLTC cycle on one charge. Top speed is limited to 130 km/h. Curb weight — 1340 kg, gross weight — 1715 kg.
