A new £250 million national flagship could be built to replace the HMY Britannia. The Telegraph can report that with private backing after the State Department of Business and Trade gave tentative support for the idea.
The flagship project to help broker trade deals for the UK has been put on hold since November when the MoD decided to divert funds to pay for two new warships.
But Lord Johnson of Lainston, Minister for Business and Trade, said he was open to the idea of a privately funded national flagship to help broker trade deals for the UK.

Mr Maiden's New Flagship made one design; the rest were created by Harland & Wolf, designer of the ships Holder and OCEA (Great Britain). They are on display for the first time at Boat International this month.

The Telegraph has been campaigning to replace HMY Britannia since 2016. In January, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said he would like a replacement for Britannia built «in my lifetime» to help the British feel «proud as a country.»
A Department of Defense spokesman said: «For the time being there are no plans to create a national flagship. However, the program was intended to showcase the extraordinary diversity and depth of British maritime experience, as exemplified by the designs submitted for the competition.
Four designs for a new national flagship
The new flagship was to be the «pearl in the crown» of the shipbuilding strategy of Her Majesty's Government. She was scheduled to be launched «in the last quarter of 2024» and to enter service at the end of 2025, and she would dwarf the royal yacht Britannia in both size and staffing.
The specification called for the design chosen to be able to accommodate at least 36 passengers, 52 Royal Navy crew, and also take 256 passengers at sea for short voyages. Public areas on board had to be adapted for conferences, exhibitions, banquets and receptions.
Harland and Wolff&# Design 39 th includes space for banquets and receptions.
Stephen Watson, board member of the national flagship, told The Telegraph that the MoD team was «breathless» when the competition kicked off.

Since the competition is over, the teams have been able to make their designs public for the first time. Mr Watson said: “The four shortlisted projects are a testament to the creativity and innovation of the UK's thriving ship design sector. I challenge anyone who is not impressed with the designs.
