Jesse Marsh will not return to the Premier League for Leicester City. recalled from the recruitment process to appoint the next Leicester City manager as he was the frontrunner to take over the club facing relegation.
The American manager, sacked by Leeds United in February, was close to an agreement and was supposed to take place at the Leicester training ground on Saturday. He watched Saturday's defeat to Bournemouth and made his decision after talking to his coaching staff that night. The club was informed this morning.
It is speculated that Marsh believes the club will need a different manager in the Championship next season if they are relegated, as well as a different player profile from what he is used to recruiting. The club have picked up one point from their last eight games and will face Manchester City on Saturday. After that, they could easily be six points clear of safety with seven games left.
Defeat to other relegation candidates Bournemouth brought further problems. Harvey Barnes suffered an injury that interim manager Adam Sadler identified as a potential hamstring problem after the game. Youri Tielemans, a free agent in July, did not play after injuring his ankle in the defeat against Arsenal in late February.
Marsh's experience at Leeds also shaped his thinking and he was cool in decision making. Jobs at Southampton thereafter became available with the dismissal of Nathan Jones. The decision came as a surprise to Leicester City, who interviewed several candidates last week. This means the club will now have to go back to one of those who met with the club during a series of preliminary interviews in London on Thursday.
One possibility is former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith, most recently at Norwich City who could yet be appointed — possibly with former Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare as his assistant. Rafael Benítez and Martin O'Neil, one of the greatest coaches in the history of the club, were also mentioned in the process.
