The older sister of Scotland's new First Minister opens up about how she struggles with being nicknamed 'Humza the Useless'.
Faiza Yusuf said she stopped using Twitter because of attacks on Humza Yusaf, saying that «it was quite difficult for me to separate the politician from my brother.»
She described how she and her mother overheard hospital orderlies calling the former health minister «useless Yusaf.» He is also regularly referred to as «Humza the Useless» on social media and by political opponents in attacks on his competence.
But Ms Yousaf told STV in Scotland tonight that her brother was «quite relaxed» about ridicule and «could almost laugh it off, like 'how unfortunate Yusaf walks with useless'.
She said: “Recently, I was in the hospital visiting my mother, and I was passing by and heard the porters talking to each other. And one of them said: “Yes, you know, useless Yusuf.”
“I wanted to say something about this, but I thought: well, they have the right to their opinion about someone . He is a public figure.»
Ms. Yousaf said her brother's decision to «not take these remarks to heart, it helps me,» but added that she was forced to leave Twitter after seeing the extent of the abuse he experienced online.
“It's hard to contain yourself and understand that there is no point in arguing with people on social networks or saying anything. There were weird things where I ended up, but that doesn't do me any good,» she told the program.
She described her brother as mischievous and a «prankster» who grew up to be «a leader among friends» when he was in high school, and said that the first minister from Asia and a Muslim in Scotland sends a «phenomenal» message to future generations.
