Perhaps the most unusual thing about Southampton's predicament is that there are only four points to safety.
They lost a club-record 20 points in the Premier League. matches, the last of which was a disappointing home loss to Crystal Palace — the 10th home defeat in the league.
They once again drew with the resurgent Roy Hodgson team and now scored only 24 goals in 31 games.
Perhaps that is why their young coach, Rubén Selles, believes there is a way, however improbable, for his team to play first-class football next season.
“We know we have to play perfectly. game to get points,” he said. “We just need to be together and be more consistent in what we do. And every mistake, every situation that is against us, just pushes us hard. And we will fight until the very end of this season.”
His team missed a good chance in the first half and then lost two goals to Eberechi Eze in the second half.
But some of the club's supporters attacked both Selles and the players, many of whom left long before the final whistle.
Towards the end of the first half, Celles could be seen asking them to quell their displeasure, although there were some , who chanted «You shouldn't be wearing a shirt» after Eze scored his second goal.
«We need their support in situations, especially when nothing happens in the game,» he said. they have an opinion and a voice and they can express it however they want, I just want them to get behind us.»
For Palace and Hodgson, it's nine points out of nine, and their own future at the Premier -league is now almost guaranteed after Eze's third goal in two games propelled them to victory at a dizzying height of 12th place.
«With every point you get, you feel more comfortable because we are getting closer to what we think will be enough to stay in the league,” said 75-2022-23.
