The Hongqi brand, owned by the Chinese auto concern FAW, showed the second-generation L5 representative flagship sedan addressed to the government agencies of the PRC and wealthy private customers.
The first generation Hongqi L5 debuted in 2013 as a purely nomenclature model based on Hongqi CA770 series sedans and limousines from the 60s: a base sedan with a length of more than 5.5 m was equipped with a 6.0-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine and a 6-speed «automatic».

It turns out that the «first» Hongqi L5 lasted exactly ten years in service and now gave way to the second generation model.

The new Hongqi L5 at first glance is not much different from its predecessor, because the front end in the style of the 60s and the characteristic suitcase-like proportions are preserved, but if you look closely, it is easy to see that the body is completely new, with the A-pillars more strongly piled back. The rear lights are more modern and slightly reminiscent of those of Cadillac models. Bumpers are no longer even conditionally marked, they simply do not exist. An additional wide ventilation slot has been placed under the enlarged radiator grille, the wheel arches have become less prominent, the side perimeter of the glazing now extends beyond the rear pillars of the body.

The interior is also made in the style of its predecessor, at some points it became even more conservative: the instrument panel moved from the center to the driver's side, the main unit climate control is now not touch-sensitive, but classic push-buttons, there is more metal and jewelry edging in the decoration, carpets on the floor are more magnificent and thicker than before.

Most likely, the V8 engine in the new sedan is the same as in the Flanman crossover Hongqi LS7, where it produces a modest 360 hp, although more than 650 “horses” were announced at the announcement stage.

The former Hongqi L5 was considered the official car of the highest Chinese leadership, on a specially prepared elongated and armored version (it was called Hongqi L9) appeared in public many times the current CPC General Secretary Xi Jinping, but, for example, during a recent visit to Moscow, the Chinese leader was moving around the city not on Hongqi L9, but on a more modern looking Hongqi limousine, which has no “civilian” counterparts.
The new Hongqi L5, as it was shown in Shanghai, is likely to go to retail sales, but when and at what prices is still unknown.
