A parking lot collapsed in Lower Manhattan
At least one person died, four were taken to hospital after a multi-story parking garage collapsed in New York collapsed on Tuesday, officials said.
Aerial footage circulating on social media shows cars stacked on top of each other in a jumble of cracked concrete in Lower Manhattan's financial district.
The building on Ann Street " in pancakes, collapsed down to the basement floor" This was announced at a press conference at the scene by Kazimir Vilenchik, acting head of the New York City Construction Department.
Its appearance has been preserved, but officials have said they fear further collapse.
Fire Chief John Esposito said they ordered all of their original firefighters to leave the building, but the robotics unit was able to deploy a robot dog inside and launch drones to conduct searches.
He said they thought there were six workers in the building when it collapsed. “Four of them were hospitalized in a stable condition.
"We have one patient who died" he said at a press conference.
According to him, the sixth person refused medical care. Esposito said the fire department believes everyone has been accounted for. Officials urged New Yorkers to avoid the area.
The mayor of the city said that new technologies have played an important role in emergency response.
"I want to note that, thank God, we have a robot dog that was able to enter the building" Mayor Eric Adams said.
The robot dog was able to send a video from inside the building, after which drones were launched inside to conduct an assessment and search.
The cause of the collapse is not yet known.
