Lachlan Murdoch dropped a libel suit against an Australian news website just days after Fox News agreed to pay $788m (£635m) to settle with Dominion Voting Systems.
< p> Mr. Murdoch, Rupert's son and chief executive of Fox Corporation, sued website publisher Crikey last year over an article that accused him of being involved in the January 6 Capitol storming.
His attorney, John Churchill, said in a statement that the executive was confident he would have won the legal battle but wanted to prevent the Dominion case from being resubmitted.
He said, “Mr Murdoch. .. is unwilling to continue to allow Crikey to use the court to handle a case from another jurisdiction that has already been settled and to contribute to a marketing campaign aimed at attracting subscribers and increasing their profits.
Private media, owner of Crikey , described the result as «a significant victory for legitimate public interest journalism.»
The publisher added: “The thing is, Murdoch sued us and then dropped the case. We are proud to have exposed the hypocrisy and abuse of power of a media billionaire. This is a victory for freedom of speech. We won.”
A lawyer for Private Media said he would seek reimbursement of the company's legal costs from Mr. Murdoch. — a profile libel case involving Murdoch's media empire in recent days.
Earlier this week, Fox News settled a lawsuit filed by Dominion alleging that the news channel knowingly falsely claimed that the company's technology was used to rig the vote in the 2020 US presidential election.
Both Lachlan and his father Rupert had to testify in a high-profile trial before the deal was agreed at 11 a.m. on an article by Kraiki describing the Murdoch family as «accomplices in the Capitol riots who have not been charged.»
Mr. Murdoch called the allegations «false» and «scandalous».
Crikey, founded in 2000 and employing 10 full-time journalists, hit back by posting its correspondence with Mr. Murdoch's lawyers online and accusing him of «abuse of power in the media.»
In a statement this week, the news site said the Dominion settlement proved them right, adding: «We stand by our position that Lachlan Murdoch was guilty of distributing lies about the results of the 2020 election.”
Mr. Murdoch's lawyer said the Dominion case did not mention the Capitol riots because the judge ruled they were not relevant.
< br /> /> Mr Chuchill added, “Furthermore, Plaintiff Dominion Voting Systems has made it clear that he will not allege that Fox News caused the events of January 6, and has not at any time claimed that Mr. Murdoch was personally responsible for the events of January 6th. .
«However, this is exactly what Kraiki is claiming in the article and what Kraiki is trying to prove in Australia.»
