Yevgeny Prigozhin publicly complained about attempts to minimize the role of Wagner and belittle his achievements. The mercenary group may soon cease to exist as it hit the Russian military over the supply of ammunition.
Close to Vladimir Putin, Mr. Prigozhin has repeatedly touted the group’s success on the battlefield in Ukraine despite the fact , which he calls the Kremlin's attempts to weaken them.
He accused the Russian Defense Ministry of obstructing his supply of ammunition and manpower. Western analysts believe that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is trying to suppress Prigozhin's growing political influence.
“Now, with regard to the need in general for shells at the front, what do we want. Today we are approaching the moment when Wagner is ending,” he told Russian military blogger Semyon Pegov.
“Wagner will cease to exist in a short period of time. We will go down in history, there is nothing to worry about, it happens,” he continued.
Mr. Prigozhin, known for his combative style and ironic sense of humour, made the comment after Thursday's joke about Bakhmut where the group led the assault.
Mr. Prigozhin said his forces would stop shelling the city to allow Ukrainian forces to show the city to American journalists. He later said that it was a joke. It is unclear whether his recent comments were made in jest.
During the conflict in Ukraine, the Wagner group has evolved from a shadowy agent of the Kremlin, who is allegedly used to do Putin's dirty work in Syria and Africa, where he has military and mining contracts to the main militias playing a crucial role in the war in Ukraine.
Mr. Prigozhin has publicly complained about attempts to downplay Wagner and belittle his accomplishments, though the Kremlin denies the split.
Previously MPs this week renewed calls to classify the group as a terrorist organization after a new report showed it played a role in destabilizing Sudan.
