David Starkey sparked a racist scandal after claiming Rishi Sunak was «not fully familiar with our culture» while criticizing him for being crowned.
Mr Starkey did comments about the prime minister, the first non-white tenant. No. 10, as he accused him of being absent from the preparations for the celebration.
Senior Conservative MPs accused the 78-year-old historian of derogatory references to the Prime Minister's Hindu faith and his British Indian heritage.
< p>Asked by GB News if Mr. Sunak was sidelined from his coronation preparations, Dr. Starkey agreed that he was «invisible.»
«And I think one of the reasons I think that a lot went wrong, for example why parliament was not properly represented at the coronation of a parliamentary monarchy, is because the government is simply not interested.
“The Constitution does not interest him. You have a prime minister, I think a man of great talent, outstanding skills, but in fact he is not fully familiar with our culture.
“Now I know that it is difficult and contradictory to say, but I I think it's true. And again, this coronation will emphasize too much, I think, our differences, not what unites us.”
He agreed when he was told that his remarks were about “religious matters” and continued criticize participants who were invited to say the Lord's Prayer in their own language.
“This' going to rebuild the Tower of Babel,” he said. “We need an Archbishop of Canterbury named Welby to rebuild the Tower of Babel. Again, now I think there is this deep problem. Everywhere in the text of the coronation service, where you would expect the word «nation», it is in the plural.
«Uninformed opinion.» Doctor Starkey Thursday night.
Nadhim Zahavi, former chancellor and chairman of the Conservative Party, said: “This is an ill-informed opinion. Racist opinion.
“He only needs to spend a few hours with Rishi or me in Stratford-upon-Avon or Yorkshire to understand how strong our culture is based on diversity, pride and love. . He would do well to read Shakespeare.
Caroline Noakes, Conservative MP for Romsey and Southampton North, added: “What a vile and racist comment. The Prime Minister grew up in my constituency and is as British as me and David Starkey.
«The coronation is a great opportunity for all of us to celebrate our wonderful and diverse culture, and Starkey's comment says a lot more about him than about the prime minister.»
Sander Katwala, director of the British Future think tank, said they welcome the fact that no one previously questioned that Mr. Sunak's ethnicity or creed makes him less legitimate as a national leader.
“Unfortunately, David Starkey tried to bring this awkward, biased and divisive point of view to a nationwide event that seeks to bring people together,” said Mr. Katwala.
Controversial Past
Dr. «. Year Story, a two-part documentary for GB News on the history of royal coronations, which aired earlier this week.
This is not the first time a historian who rose to prominence in the 2000s for his work on Tudor politics , has been embroiled in controversy over allegations of racism.
In 2020, he was forced to resign from his academic positions at Cambridge and Canterbury Christ Church Universities after he made comments about slavery in which he referred to «fucking blacks».
In an interview on the podcast he argued that slavery could not be considered genocide because «otherwise there would not be so many damned blacks in Africa or in Britain.»
Dr. Starkey apologized for his «serious mistake» but insisted on freedom of speech should not rule out talk of race.
In 2011, he told Newsnight that «whites turned black» when discussing the London riots, while continuing to argue that Enoch Powell «was absolutely right in one sense… the Tiber did not foam with blood but was on fire. They surrounded Tottenham and Clapham.
The following year, he said that the gangs of Indian origin from Rochdale «operated within their cultural norms.» This week he told The Spectator: «I was just pointing out that the gangs involved are acting in accordance with Punjab values.»
