Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe: light but confusing restyling of 6-cylinder versions

The younger, 6-cylinder versions of the GT 43 4Matic+ and GT 53 4Matic+ sports liftback are now hard to distinguish from the front 8-cylinder, while a new V8 Styling Package is available as an option, making 6-cylinder cars less like 8-cylinder ones.

The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe debuted in the spring of 2018 and since then it has not had a general comprehensive restyling — only point updates. Mercedes-AMG today announced that it has slightly redesigned the 6-cylinder versions of the GT 43 4Matic+ and GT 53 4Matic+. For them, the V8 Styling Package option was previously available (in Germany it costs 3451 euros), making 6-cylinder liftbacks more similar to 8-cylinder ones. Now the front bumper from the previous V8 Styling package has become basic (shown on the blue car), and the design of the stern is almost has not changed — only a chrome strip has been added between the exhaust pipes.

The V8 Styling Package is still available as an option (shown on the silver car), but in an updated form: a rear bumper with larger diffuser fins and a more curly black section — the same as the previous V8 Styling Package, but the front designers heavily altered. In the new V8 Styling Package, the slot for the grille is increased due to the increase in the lower part (the area of ​​​​the grille itself has not changed), the lower air intake has been expanded and flattened, and new, much narrower side air ducts have appeared.

It turns out that with the new V8 Styling Package, 6-cylinder liftbacks will look less like 8-cylinders — this, of course, is a real marketing curiosity. Nevertheless, the new V8 Styling Package itself looks quite original and there will certainly be those who want to order it.

Together with the restyling, the 6-cylinder liftbacks received an expanded basic package: it included the previously available as an option an electric sunroof and wireless charging for smartphones. In addition, the graphics of the proprietary MBUX multimedia system have been updated.

The technical filling has not changed: an in-line 6-cylinder 3.0-liter M 256 gasoline turbo engine on the GT 43 4Matic + version produces a maximum of 367 hp. and 500 Nm, on the GT 53 4Matic + version — 435 hp. and 520 Nm. In both versions, a 48-volt starter-generator with a power of 22 hp assists the gasoline engine during acceleration. Gearbox — 9-speed «automatic» AMG Speedshift, drive — only all-wheel drive. Whether the rear-wheel drive version of the GT 43 was preserved after restyling is not clear — it is not indicated in the press release. The GT 43 4Matic+ version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and has a top speed of 270 km/h, while the GT 53 4Matic+ version has 4.5 seconds and 285 km/h.

At the top of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe range is still the plug-in hybrid version of the 63 S E Performance with 843 hp.
