The Wasps are set to find out at the end of the month if they can play Sixways in next season's championship after the Worcester Warriors takeover has been completed.
Wasps, which has plunged into administration at the start of the current season and subsequently promoted to the second tier, officially applied to the Rugby Football Union to host matches on Sixways. The club has approved the Armco Stadium in Solihull as a possible home ground, according to Telegraph Sport in December.
Confirmation of their Sixways bid, which is «subject to further RFU regulatory requirements», was received on the day Begbis Trainor announced the takeover of Worcester Warriors by the Atlas group. The RFU is expected to consult with local stakeholders on the Wasps request before the union board considers it by the end of May.
Jim O'Toole and James Sandford were key figures in negotiations with Atlas who issued a statement saying they were looking forward to «bringing their vision of rugby, business and the wider community to Sixways». It remains unclear at what level the new club will play and under what guise. A merger with Stourbridge was previously discussed. Atlas has singled out Sixways staff «who ensure the successful operation of facility management.»
It is understood that the Sixways lease has yet to be signed by the Wasps, who wish to compete in the 13-Team Championship as well as the Rugby Premier League Cup next season. Sources close to the club have indicated that they are keen to capitalize on additional income opportunities at their own stadium whenever possible.
Last month, The Guardian reported that the Wasps planned to build a 24,000-seat stadium. part of the complex in the M40 corridor, which will be fully operational by the 2027-28 season. The hope was to include a hotel and meeting rooms on the same site.
Back in February of this year, the RFU ruled that the Wasps would be able to take their place in the championship, but Worcester would not be able due to that the latter cannot pay rugby creditors.
