Labour leader said he was 'relaxed'; about people who are rich and want to be rich.

Sir Keir Starmer said: "I know what aspiration is"

His comments echo those of Peter Mandelson who said in 1998 that he was “very comfortable with people getting obscenely rich as long as they pay taxes.”

Asked by the BBC if he agreed with these New Labor comments, Sir Keir said: “I'm very comfortable with people getting richer and richer.”

" I know what aspiration is, I mean, I came out of the working class and was able to not only lead the Crown Prosecution Office, but now lead the Labor Party. So my story is a story of aspirations and opportunities.

"I understand that in other people, but I obviously want everyone to pay taxes, and I want justice, and I want equality, and I want every child to have that opportunity."< /p>

However, earlier Sir Keir reiterated his statement that Rishi Sunak's wealth means he cannot fully understand the pressures households face.

Sunak “knows no worry”; be poor

He told Sky News: “If you compare the prime minister and me: when I was growing up, we couldn't pay our bills and our phone was cut off, and I know the dismay and shame that this has on families. so I know what people go through. He's a wealthy man – that's good, I'm not knocking that.

"But that means he doesn't understand, he doesn't 39;don't know what kind of anxiety people are feeling"

Mr Sunak was educated at Winchester College, one of the best private schools in the UK.

Asked by Sky News if he would send his children to a private school, Sir Keir replied: “No, I would not.

He also said that he would not use private medical care. , but added: “I'm not going to personally attack the Prime Minister for sending his children to a private school.”

"I mean sometimes, and I think that the cost-of-living crisis was one of them, you have to be able to step into the shoes of the voters and properly understand what they're going through, and I don't think the prime minister is able to properly understand the decisions that families have to make as a result of terrible decisions his government"
