Sixteen-year-old Russian woman advances to the third round
Molly McElvey in Paris
Fanfare is heard around the 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva, the youngest tennis player, advanced to the third round of Roland Garros in 18 years. But she doesn't really know what all the fuss is about.
Andreeva just turned 16 in April and is playing in her first Grand Slam main draw since qualifying. Her advance to the third round is a milestone that many admire, but she has big things to do. “I don’t think I’m having a lot of success right now, you know – I haven’t won a single tournament,” she said on Wednesday, as if asking everyone to cool down. As for her cherished dream? «I know that [Novak] Djokovic [won] 22 Grand Slams, so I want to get to 25 if possible.»
These are huge goals, but Andreeva's outdoor talents and calm demeanor could very well be a winning combination. On Wednesday, she easily beat France's Diane Parry to a dominant 6-1, 6-2 victory in her first exhibition court experience in a major tournament.
This followed a similar 6-2 rout, 6-1 against Alison Riske-Amritraj in the first round, after which she said she was inspired by a text message from Andy Murray, whom she congratulated on winning the Challenger tournament in Aix-en. -Provence.
On Wednesday, she almost shrugged when asked what it was like to win another victory. “I can’t say that I didn’t expect it,” she said. “I fought for it, and I did it.”
Andreev has long been tipped for success. Her family moved from Siberia to Sochi and then to Cannes when Andreeva and her older sister Erika began to show promise in the sport. She was snatched up by IMG Super Agents when she was just 12 years old, and after reaching the final of the Women's Australian Open in January, she proved this clay court season exactly why she's ready for the big leagues.
In Madrid, she used her wildcard to finish in the bottom 16 on her 16th birthday, becoming the youngest player ever to do so in a WTA 1000 event, beating two top 20 women along the way.
She also became the third-youngest player to win a WTA 1000 main draw match after Chichi Bellis and last year's French Open finalist Coco Gauff, her upcoming third-round opponent who beat Julia Grabher yesterday. 6-2, 6-3.
Four years ago, Gauff captured the world's imagination by reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon in her Grand Slam debut at just 15 years old. If Andreeva can beat the American on Friday, the same hype will no doubt be at Roland Garros.
According to Andreeva, the problem of early success is to stay on your feet. “As my coach says, don’t look like a diva, stay humble all the time. I'll just be myself.»
