A new brand of engine oil, TOM'S, has appeared in Russia. For some, this name sounds louder than any words, and someone may still not know what this Japanese company is famous for. What makes TOM’S consider its oil truly of high quality, modern and premium?
The TOM'S name is best known to fans of motorsport and tuning. After all, this company was founded in 1974 by two prominent people from Toyota: factory team driver Tachi Nobuhide and engineer Oiwa Kiyoshi. Such a tandem, combining racing experience and engineering knowledge, allowed TOM'S to successfully develop in two specialized areas at once: auto racing and tuning. On the one hand, TOM'S has become the organizer of Toyota factory teams in various racing disciplines, including the Super GT, Formula 3, WEC championships and so on. On the other hand, a year after its foundation, the company received the status of an official tuning studio for Toyota cars, developing both elements for external tuning and tuning kits for the engine, transmission, suspension, and so on.

The best thing about the company's status is that it has released many exclusive road cars under its own name: for example, TOM'S T020 based on the Toyota MR-2, TOM'S Z382 based on the Toyota Soarer, TOM'S C5 Supra and so on. Even Toyota's flagship, Century sedan, received a version from an official tuning studio. And this, of course, does not count racing cars designed to participate in racing championships – from touring car to formula. Famous race cars such as the Toyota TS010 wore the Toyota Team TOM'S name on their livery. And from the latest achievements, three victories in a row in the Japanese Super Formula Lights championship in 2020, 2021 and 2022 can be noted.

Despite the inextricable connection of TOM'S with Toyota, TOM'S oils are suitable for Japanese, Korean, Chinese and American cars. This is confirmed by API and ILSAC certification. According to API (American Petroleum Institute) standards, TOM'S oils meet the latest API SP specification, adopted in 2020. The same applies to standardization according to the ILSAC (International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee), the International Lubricant Standards Committee. In total, there are six quality categories here, of which three are still relevant today: GF-4, GF-5 and GF-6 – and TOM'S oils meet the requirements of the most modern ILSAC GF-6 category, which came into force on May 1, 2020.
API SP and ILSAC GF-6 standards are designed not only to provide improved lubricity and energy saving properties, but also to prevent the effect of LSPI (Low Speed Pre-Ignition), low speed pre-ignition, or, more simply, pre-ignition of the mixture in cylinders at low speeds. In addition, today's standards place increased demands on fuel economy, volatility, foaming, filtration quality at low temperatures, oil performance under pressure increase, as well as compliance with regulations to protect the timing chain from wear and stretching.
