Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation — Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC «AVTOVAZ» Denis Manturov, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, President of JSC «AVTOVAZ» Maxim Sokolov and General Director of the production site «LADA St. Petersburg» Ivan Mironov took part in the solemn ceremony of launching the first production car LADA X-cross 5.
LADA X-cross 5, a new middle-class crossover, was created in cooperation with one of the new eastern partners of JSC «AVTOVAZ» . In total, by the end of the year, LADA St. Petersburg plans to produce up to 10 thousand cars of classes C and D, and from 2024 to begin localization of production with the involvement of suppliers from St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.
“More than one and a half thousand employees will continue to work at the capacities of the St. Petersburg site of AVTOVAZ. The presence of such a ready, qualified team serves as a guarantee for the implementation of medium-term plans for the development of this site. Bearing in mind both the deepening of the localization of the LADA X-cross 5 model, and the organization in 2024 of the production of the D-class sedan. In order to quickly put these plans into practice, a Russian pool of suppliers of automotive components, raw materials and materials has already been formed. There are many manufacturers from St. Petersburg among them, – noted the Deputy Prime Minister – Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Russia, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC «AVTOVAZ» Denis Manturov.
“In less than six months, the plant team, with the support of AVTOVAZ specialists, managed to fully prepare production for the production of new car models. In these unprecedentedly short terms, the conveyor was reconfigured here, logistics schemes were changed, and staff was trained. The release of the first serial LADA X-cross 5 confirms the success of the work done. We are grateful for the comprehensive support that we receive for this project personally from the Chairman of the Board of Directors of AVTOVAZ Denis Valentinovich Manturov, the relevant Ministry, shareholder, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Dmitrievich Beglov and the City Government represented by Vice-Governor Kirill Valentinovich Polyakov and Chairman of the Industrial Policy Committee Kirill Alexandrovich Soloveichik. The new car is in many ways significant for our company. For the first time in its history, LADA enters a higher class C, which will help attract new customers to our Brand. The total volume of production of new cars in St. Petersburg in 2023 can reach up to 10 thousand units, new models are ahead of us, including those in the D»,– told the President of JSC «AVTOVAZ» Maxim Sokolov.
“The President of Russia set the task – ensure import substitution and technological sovereignty of the country. On behalf of Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, the Strategy for the Development of the Automotive Industry until 2035 was developed and approved. St. Petersburg actively participates in its implementation. The share of our city in the Russian production of vehicles was about 20%, – said Alexander Beglov.
He noted that the conveyor at the St. Petersburg site of AVTOVAZ was launched in the shortest possible time. “No one believed that it could be done, but we did it. Thanks to such projects, the automotive industry will remain one of the basic sectors of the St. Petersburg industry,” the head of the Northern capital emphasized. As part of the preparation for the production of LADA X-cross 5 at the site in St. Petersburg, the equipment was upgraded in the shortest possible time, including the main conveyor, as well as internal logistics and assembly production processes. A test batch of vehicles was made for personnel training and technology development. Most of the preparatory work was carried out by the specialists of the LADA St. Petersburg plant on their own.
The LADA X-cross 5 car is equipped with a 160-horsepower turbocharged engine and a 7-speed automatic transmission, as well as all the necessary safety options and comfort, including the ADAS intelligent security system (driver fatigue control, lane departure warning, adaptive high beam switching, all-round visibility systems, emergency braking, etc.), a multimedia system and a panoramic roof. The start of sales of LADA X-cross 5 is scheduled for the third quarter of 2023.
