The Roewe brand, owned by the Chinese automaker SAIC, has published photos of the updated i5 compact sedan. At the moment, it is the most sought-after model in the Roewe range, but the interest of the Chinese consumer in it is rapidly weakening.
After the collapse of the British MG Rover Group in 2005, SAIC took over the MG brand, but could not agree on the acquisition of the Rover brand and instead launched a similar brand, Roewe, in 2006. The peak of Roewe sales in China came in 2018, when almost 480,000 cars of this brand were sold, then the demand curve went down. In the first five months of this year, Roewe's sales in China were 66,197 vehicles, according to CAAM (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers), down 47.1% from the same period in 2022. The Roewe i5 family, which includes the Ei5 electric station wagon, sells better than other models of the brand, but it also has a negative sales trend: 27,109 units were sold in January-May. (-39.3%).

The Roewe i5 sedan debuted in 2018, while the aforementioned Roewe Ei5 electric wagon appeared a year earlier in 2017. In 2021, the entire family experienced the first restyling, at the same time, the i5 sedan received a powerful sports version of the GT with a special design. Outside of China, the Roewe brand, unlike MG, is essentially not needed by anyone, so SAIC sells some Roewe models in export markets under the MG brand. For example, the Roewe i5 is known as the MG5 in some Latin American and Southeast Asian countries, while the Ei5 electric station wagon is sold in Europe as the MG5 Electric.

Last December, photos of the updated Roewe i5 sedan surfaced in the electronic database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry for the second time, and today SAIC published several official pictures, hinting that the newly rejuvenated Roewe i5 will soon go on sale. The changes are quite large-scale: the plastic of almost all the outer body panels, including the doors and the hood, has been redrawn, which is usually not done during restyling. The headlights have acquired “claws”, the radiator grille has become wider, the plastic of the sidewalls has become more complicated, the taillights are now cosplaying Lexus models. The wheelbase has not changed — 2680 mm, the overall length has increased from 4607 to 4676 mm, the width has increased from 1818 to 1838 mm, the height is the same — 1498 mm. Wheels — 16- or 17-inch.

The interior is completely new, and you can also notice Lexus motifs in it. The front panel now has a wide scoreboard that combines the instrument and multimedia screens, each with a diagonal of 10.25 inches. All-round viewing system and front seats of increased comfort are declared in the equipment. The updated Roewe i5 has only one engine — a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol (129 hp, 158 Nm) paired with a CVT, front-wheel drive only. The current Roewe i5 is offered with a slightly less powerful 1.5-liter “aspirated” with 120 hp. and 150 Nm in combination with a manual gearbox or a CVT, and the GT version has a turbo engine of the same volume with 173 hp. and 275 Nm in combination with a 7-speed «automatic» type DCT (with two clutches). The front suspension for all versions is of the McPherson type, the rear is semi-independent with a transverse torsion beam.
The start date of sales and prices of the updated Roewe i5 have not yet been announced, the pre-reform sedan costs in China from 67,900 yuan ( 797 thousand rubles in translation at the current rate), GT version — from 87,900 yuan (1.03 million rubles).
