The prime minister faced backlash against his leadership when Nadine Dorries, a supporter of Boris Johnson, warned that “angry Tories will not support Sunak” and added that voters “know how to dispense their own justice.” – eco-friendly cost policies are not popular.”

The Conservatives held on to Mr. Johnson's former seat, where one of the key issues was Sadiq Khan's insistence on extending Ulez's ultra-low emission zone to the entire city.

But they lost heavily to Labor in Selby and Ainsty and the Liberal Democrats in Somerset and Frome.

Andrea Jenkins, a Conservative supporter, tweeted that Selby's result was a “wake-up call”, adding: “It's time for the party to implement our manifesto against illegal immigration, zero tolerance to the police, including with an ecological lot.”

She stressed that the party should have “low taxes” and should “stop this net zero push that is just financially burdening UK taxpayers. There is time, but we must act now,” and said: “Turnout in Selby and Ainsty was incredibly low at 41.8% compared to 71% before. About 21,000 voters stayed at home.

“There is less appetite for Starmer in the Conservative vote than apathy. The conservative party needs to wake up and return to conservative politics.”

Lord Frost, a former Brexit minister and Mr Johnson ally, has called for a postponement of the 2030 ban on new gasoline cars.

“We shouldn't kid ourselves – Somerton and Selby are really bad results, with conditional fluctuations against us even worse than in the national polls,” he said.

“The challenge is to give our voters something they can vote for. Uxbridge at least had something to vote against – Ulez. The lesson, of course, is that green politics is very unpopular when there are direct costs to the people, as all the polls really say.

“This time it hit Labour. But soon it could be us if we don't rethink heat pumps and the 2030 deadline for electric vehicles.”

Ms Dorries has criticized claims that the Long Boris Syndrome will affect the party's chances in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, where the former prime minister was an MP before he resigned last month.

She tweeted: “If the horrific, fictional, media-concocted Long Boris Syndrome really existed, he would feel worst in his own former constituency e. The hesitation and numbers make it very clear the angry Tories won't back Sunak – they know how to administer their own justice.”

Sir Jacob said his message to the Conservative MPs was “don't panic” although the hesitation seen in Somerset and Frome indicated his seat in North East Somerset was under threat.

On BBC Radio 4's Today programme, he said the Conservatives should support Mr Sunak “whatever” because a Conservative prime minister is better than a Labor prime minister, but said the Conservatives New leadership can learn from Uxbridge.

“You have to learn from where the government has done surprisingly well with the forms and learn from them that costly green policies are not popular,” he said. Either way, you have to keep up with what the voters are doing. Voters are buying cleaner cars with cleaner engines year after year. Engine development in recent decades has been phenomenal.

“You can do it by osmosis, not by hitting people, because all these accusations are really about the underprivileged motorist, not the rich motorist who buys a new car every few years anyway.”

Sir John Redwood, former head of Political Section 10 under Margaret Thatcher, added: “Will Mayor Khan Oulez now voters tell him how unpopular he is.” ren?

“After the victory at Uxbridge, against Ulez, will the government now act to stop so many attacks on motorists?”

George Osborne, the former chancellor, backed Mr. Sunak, stating: “Despite the terrible results at Selby and Somerton, the victory at Uxbridge gave the Tories something very valuable that they did not have yesterday – I hope.

< p>“Hopefully they can get voters' attention on what the Starmer government would mean for their cost of living. Hopefully it's more like 1992 than 1997.”
