The facility, called the Future Mobility Development Center, has cost over €300 million to and joins other BMW proving grounds in Aschheim, Munich, Miramas, France, and also Arjeploge and Sweden.
The site is spread over more than 600 hectares of land and allows BMW to test all kinds of different driving conditions, including city, countryside and freeway driving.
BMW has already tested two stand-alone prototype at the test site. These vehicles are equipped with many additional sensors and have been programmed to drive the same same routes over and over again. According to BMW's self-driving car project leader Philippe Ludwig, having autonomous vehicles doing repetitive tasks like this is better than having human drivers who can become disinterested or tired.
Autonomous prototypes The BMWs covered approximately 70,000 km in tests that include high-speed autobahn maneuvers, brake light tests, brake tests, and driving tests.
