British Cycling does not expect Laura Kenny to compete in the Paris Olympics next year.
British's most successful Olympic champion gave birth to her second child, a boy named Monty, on July 20th. Ahead of the UCI Cycling World Championships starting this week in Glasgow, British Cycling Director of Cycling Stephen Park told Telegraph Sport: p>
“I think it will be a big test for her to return to Paris,” said the Scot. «I think at the moment her plan is to try and return to the World Championships at the end of the year.»
Kenny and her husband, multiple Olympic champion Sir Jason Kenny, gave birth to their first son, Albi, in 2017 year. Kenny then suffered a miscarriage in November 2021 and an ectopic pregnancy in January 2022. When she announced her latest pregnancy in January of this year. she didn't mention Paris.
However, Kenny has been sounding more optimistic lately, and it certainly wouldn't be surprising if she's set her sights on a sensational comeback given her Olympian background. «I just think never say never,» the 31-year-old told the Manchester Evening News in May. «If I don't try, I'll never know, and I know the year seems crazy, but people have been doing crazier things.
“If I don’t try, I won’t know if I can succeed or not. I don't want to look back thinking, «What if I tried?».
Park, however, said he wasn't betting on it, especially since he had so little chance of performing. in front of Paris and with such a strong women's endurance team led by Kenny's 2020 Tokyo Madison winning partner, Cathy Archibald.
«Of course we expect [Kenny] to get back on the bike» — he said. “She has a return-to-trip program. But, you know, you have to come back and be in good shape. And she is in an incredibly competitive team with very strong riders. And she has to be absolutely ready and motivated to do it.
“Last time I talked to her, she was [motivated]. But you know, she just had a baby. So I dare say she will have some time to think about it before she can think about [the Olympics].”
Jason Kenny, Laura's husband, a seven-time Olympic champion, will be in Glasgow as he now coaches the men's sprint team.
