Acura crossover, developed jointly with GM, will debut in August

The ZDX and ZDX Type S SUVs will go on sale in the US market early next year. The premiere will take place in two weeks.

The Acura brand is owned by the Japanese company Honda, while the main market for it is the States. Earlier it became known that the brand plans to completely switch to electric vehicles in the United States by 2040, and by 2030 the share of “green” cars in this market should be approximately 50% of the total number of cars sold. It is known that Acura's first mass-produced fully electric model will be the ZDX crossover, which is now in the final stages of development.

The company has previously used the name ZDX, which will receive a new serial SUV: this was the name of the mid-size crossover with a sloping roof, which was produced between 2009 and 2013. The novelty of the Japanese brand will be based on the Precision EV concept (the name is translated from English as “precision”, “accuracy”), which was introduced almost a year ago.

At the end of last year, the manufacturer showed official pictures of the Acura ZDX: the crossover was captured during road tests. The prototype was then hidden with a camouflage film, so that the details of the exterior, as well as the interior, could not be seen at that time. Judging by the teaser, the crossover will receive a wide hood with stampings, as well as a cap in the form of a branded pentagonal grille with an illuminated border and a pattern in the form of diamonds radiating from the logo in the center. Flanking the grille are a pair of horizontal narrow-shaped headlights with LED «curves» running lights. A large central and two side air intakes are built into the lower part of the front bumper. The teaser also shows traditional exterior mirrors and roof rails.

The novelty was created in the design studio Acura in Southern California. It is known that the crossover will appear both in the standard version of the ZDX and in the “charged” version of the ZDX Type S. At the same time, the manufacturer promised that the hot version of the SUV will become “the most powerful and fastest accelerating crossover in the history of the brand.” Specifications will be announced later.

The model was developed as part of a partnership between the Japanese company Honda and the American concern General Motors. As previously reported, the Acura ZDX will be based on the BEV3 Ultium platform developed by GM. It is possible that the crossover will share equipment with related models of GM concern — Chevrolet Blazer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. By the way, the Type S version can be equipped with the same twin-engine power plant as the Blazer EV SS: its total power is 565 hp and maximum torque is 878 Nm.

Company not only published a teaser for the future crossover, but also declassified the date of its presentation — August 17, 2023. In addition, the manufacturer said that both the Acura ZDX and the “hot” SUV ZDX Type S will enter the US market at the same time: the start of sales is scheduled for early next year.
