The Japanese automaker decided to get rid of the most controversial solution in its multimedia systems — hand control. So the 2024 CX-5 comes with a 10.25-inch Mazda Connect-powered center display and touch input support for Android Auto and CarPlay. However, Japanese engineers still left the proverbial physical stick to control.
Mazda seems to be trying to please everyone, and the addition of touch input is great news for the younger generation, who believe that cars should come with touch screens.  ;
Giving in to customers and adding touchscreen support to Android Auto and CarPlay also helps the automaker deal with the software glitches that the two phone duplication systems face. Using Android Auto with a stick turns into a real nightmare for some, mainly due to Google's poor implementation of this type of control. Additional buttons around the knob make it easier to access certain functions, but otherwise Coolwalk's interface was primarily designed for touch input.
In the end, forcing drivers to use the knob in Android Auto and CarPlay has resulted in more distractions behind the wheel. Because the two systems were designed with touch input in mind, drivers were often tempted to look at the screen while using the controller. Touch input feels more natural in both apps, and thanks to Mazda's new approach, drivers can choose the control method they like.
