West Ham United are looking to make Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez their first signing of a tricky summer window as striker Gianluca Scamacca prepares to leave the club after just one year in England.
West Ham have sold Declan Rice Arsenal in a deal that could be worth £105m, but they have yet to make any additions to the roster due to disagreements between David Moyes and new technical director Tim Steidten.
West. Ham tried to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton but they have so far been unwilling to match the assessment of the Champions club midfielder.
At the London Stadium, they are hoping that a deal for Alvarez, which is going well, will restart their summer transfer activity amid growing fears that the winners of the European Conference League are not ready for a new campaign.
In June, Telegraph Sport reported that Alvarez was one of West Ham's top summer targets and the Mexican international is believed to be eager to move up to the Premier League. West Ham will need to negotiate a transfer fee with Ajax, who reportedly value Alvarez at around £35m.
Alvarez has previously attracted Chelsea interest and was close to moving to Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer. before that move fell through.
Meanwhile, Scamacca is set to return to his native Italy after a bad year in English football. The striker, who signed for West Ham last season for around £30m, is close to joining Atalanta on a deal worth more than £20m.
The 24-year-old scored just three goals in 16 Premier Leagues. In league matches last season, when he was struggling with a knee injury.
West Ham want to improve on the field and remain interested in signing a second midfielder along with Alvarez. Earlier this summer, they submitted a £40m bid for Conor Gallagher from Chelsea, which was rejected.
