British doctor shoots himself in front of his wife and son after taking a wrong turn from Cape Town airport recognized as leading orthopedic surgeon.
Kar Hao Theo, 40, was injured in the head after accidentally driving into the infamous town during a violent traffic strike.
Mr Theo, who lived in Bishop's Stortford in Hertfordshire, was traveling with his wife Sarah. , and his son Hugo when he was killed last week.
Colleagues paid tribute to Mr Theo, who did both NHS and private work.
Professor Paul Lee said that Mr. Theo received a number of prestigious fellowships for his work and was an expert in trauma and foot and ankle surgery.
He said: “He was a guiding light in our professional community, a devoted friend and cornerstone of many significant projects.
“For those of us who have had the honor of calling him a friend and colleague, Kar has been a reliable and constant presence.
“The loss of Mr. Kar Theo leaves a void in our hearts and our community. His professional dedication was unparalleled, but it was his personal warmth, his commitment to friendship and his unwavering support that we will remember more fondly,” he added.
Number of suspects
Police said Mr Theo “apparently took a wrong turn and headed towards Nyanga. In Ntlangano Crescent, several suspects approached his car, shot him dead.»
The JustGiving page, set up to raise funds for his family, describes him as a «dear friend, devoted colleague and loving family man.»

Mr Theo was killed on the first day of a taxi strike that destroyed South Africa's tourist hub. to a stop last week. A total of five people were killed, buses burned and cars thrown with stones.
A Foreign Office advisory issued on the taxi strike urges travelers to stick to the main routes.
“These strikes have the potential to lead to violence and may affect several areas, including travel to and from the airport,” the warning reads.
