Tom Pidcock was accused of poor sportsmanship after colliding in the last corner before winning bronze in short track mountain biking at the UCI World Championships.
Rider Ineos Grenadiers, who is Olympic champion in this event, collided with rival Luka Schwarzbauer on the tight final corner of the Glentress Forest track in Scotland, causing the German rider to fall to the ground and lose his medals.
«I know he's Tom Pidcock and he's a superstar, but that doesn't give him the right to do it,» said a frustrated Schwarzbauer, who looked ready to finish on the podium before the incident.
«He's so aggressive, you really you can see that he is the most aggressive rider, no one else rides like that. You can do it, but in my opinion it is not quite sporty [as].»
But Pidcock, who moved up nine places in one lap, moving up from 18th to third only to fall back with a few laps left, downplayed the incident. “I went inside and pushed him onto the gravel and then, unfortunately, Luca crashed,” he said.
Pidcock's bronze went to Evie Richards in the women's competition. The 26-year-old from Malvern was in contention for the gold but lost when winner Frenchwoman Pauline Ferrand Prevost attacked as the leading group headed for the final lap.
Meanwhile, Lady. Sarah Storey claimed her 17th Paralympic road world title in the C5 Women's Individual Time Trial in Dumfries, a year after she was involved in a horrific crash in Quebec.
Britain's most successful Paralympian wins punctured lung and broken rib from a career-threatening incident, but her remarkable comeback was confirmed as she set the fastest time on a rough 28.2km course to claim her 42nd world title in 39 minutes 48.89 seconds.
