Yanfeng US Automotive Interior Systems, a company that makes the top instrument panel, reported the problem to General Motors on June 20th. A Michigan-based supplier told GM that some dashboards were manufactured without perforated passenger side airbags. The largest automaker of the «Big Three» Detroit launched an investigation on June 23, identifying a total of 403 potentially affected vehicles. Of these, 317 have been recalled in the United States.
Absence of perforation on the underside of results in improper deployment of the airbag, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger in the event of an accident. Dealers have been instructed to replace the entire instrument panel assembly free of charge to owners.
Owners will be informed no later than September 25th of the need to bring the vehicle to the nearest service center of the brand. Both 2022 and 2023 model year vehicles are being recalled, namely Bolt EVs manufactured between April 16, 2021 and June 3, 2023. Bolt EUV uses a different panel.
