Tesla CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Full Self-Driving Beta (FSD Beta) will not work on the new Tesla Model Y. These all-electric crossovers are equipped with Hardware 4, the next generation component needed to power the advanced system assistance to the driver to the next stage of development. Therefore, the appearance of a robot taxi on the road should not be expected anytime soon.
Tesla has not told anyone outside the company that the Model Y, released since May 2023, will be equipped with the HW4. He just replaced HW3, which supports FSD Beta, with HW4. The automaker later posted a message on its online store saying that the actual self-driving part would be coming soon.
Now, Elon Musk has told everyone how soon FSD Beta will start working for customers who have paid 15,000 dollars per software package. According to the executive, it will be «at least another six months» before it will be activated.
He explained that the focus is on hardware 3, which can even handle FSD V12. Elon Musk demonstrated it during a test drive in the Palo Alto area. Only after FSD «works very well» on HW3, HW4 will also learn how to maintain it.
So Model Y buyers now know that their EVs cannot be equipped with the Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Package.
